Programs

Confronti is not just a magazine! It is also a cultural program center that promotes workshops, meetings and travel study seminars with the themes of cultural and religious pluralism, dialogue among the various communities of faith present in Italy, and the historical memory of the Shoah (Holocaust).

Seeds of Peace 2006

For the ninth consecutive year Confronti is sponsoring the Seeds of Peace Participants: Seeds of Peace program which will be held from 6– 16 February 2006. Mixed pairs of Israeli and Palestinian peace educators and activists will travel throughout Italy and Switzerland meeting with schools, groups, associations, and communities sharing their hopes, vision, analysis, and concerns, as well as their efforts to build bridges of dialogue in the Middle East.

Here are some of the initiatives we offer to all who are interested in deepening their understanding of the themes included in our magazine:

Flowers of Peace

Flowers of Peace is a program that invites Israeli and Palestinian children together to Italy. After a period of getting to know each other, they mix with Italian kids to take part in some summer experiences (like summer camps sponsored by churches, associations or institutions) or school exchanges during the scholastic year. Participants: Flowers of Peace A series of psychological studies has shown how difficult adolescense is for Israeli young people who are under the constant threat of devastating terrorist attacks. On the other side, the situation of the Palestinian adolescents is well documented. They are stressed-out by the violence of the occupation and the propaganda of the extremist and militarized factions. In this situation, it is very difficult to speak of peace. This is why these educational programs are so important. They allow the participants to meet the other directly, outside of the normal confines of patterned prejudice, in a relaxed climate that facilitates encounter and friendship. This project has been sponsored many times by the City of Rome, City of Genzano, and the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Italy.

Seeds of Peace

Mixed pairs of Israeli and Palestinian peace educators and activists come to Italy and Switzerland, both to get to know each other and to share with the Italian public their hopes, vision, analysis, and concerns, as well as their efforts to build bridges of dialogue in the Middle East. After a short orientation about the Italian context, these eye witnesses meet with schools, groups, associations, and communities who have invited them. Celebrating the 9th successful year of this project, we believe the same type of program could be developed in the Lazio region.

International Travel-Study Seminars

Confronti’s travel-study seminars are varied: Israel and the Palestinian Territories, the Balkans, Turkey, Russia, the USA, Ireland, and other areas. However, they share the same characteristic in that they try to understand the political-religious complexities of the various countries through the encounter with political representatives, religious communities and common people. They also include the major tourist sites.

On the Borders of a Most Difficult Peace

This is a travel-study seminar to Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Travel-study seminar to Israel and the Palestinian Territories The complexity of the Israeli-Palestinian social and cultural context requires particular attention, but above all the necessity of having tools in order to dissect and understand it through this encounter. The seminar includes encounters with representatives of political institutions from both sides and various religious representatives, but also with men and women who, even though faced with an extremely complex and difficult situation, believe and work for peace. Confronti has promoted this type of seminar for approximately ten years.

The Italy of Religions

It is a tour of the worship places of the various minority religious traditions present in Italy. We are convinced that the visits and meetings—directly and personally with the leaders of the various communities of faith—will help the participants better grasp the complexities and richness of the mosaic of faiths in Italy. Stops will include the Grand Mosque in Rome, a Buddhist monastery in Pomaia (PI), a Sikh temple (Novellara), the Islamic Cultural Center of Milan, a Hindu ashram in Carcare (Ligurian Apennines), the Waldensian valleys (Turin Alps), as well as Synagogues and Orthodox churches (Venice).

On the Trail of the Arab-Islamic Presence in Sicily

Visits to Palermo, Trapani, Mazara del Vallo, Erice as well as Segesta and Selinunte: traces of the Arab-Islamic presence, encounters with the world of immigration, and the experience of accepting the other. These are the themes of the travel-study seminar that we propose to our readers. The goal is Sicily, one of the Italian regions most infused with multiculturalism, and ethnic, cultural, and religious pluralism. As always in the travels promoted by Confronti, the seminar will include meetings with leaders of the various cultural, religious, and social entities of the island: cultural mediators, members of the immigrant communities, scholars studying the mafia phenomenon, and leaders of the civil society. This alternative tourism to Sicily offers a different way to enter into the complexity of the history, art, and traditions of this island suspended between Europe and North Africa.

Voyage of Memory

to the deportation points and places of the Shoah. From the former Ghetto to the Fosse Ardeatine in Rome, and then on to the former concentration camp at Fossoli and the Deported Prisoners Memorial Museum in Carpi. Travel then continues to Germany, concluding with a visit to the former concentration camp at Dachau. These journeys knit together the memory of the tragedies of the Europe of yesterday to the hope of the Europe of today. Each voyage will be accompanied by an actual witness or an expert on the Holocaust who will provide opportunities for reflection, as well as the viewing of audiovisual aids.

Auschwitz

Days of Memory

Short seminars (of one or two days) with visits to actual sites linked to the memory of the Shoah, including: the Rome Ghetto, Jewish museum and synagogue, then on to the Fosse Ardeatine and the Via Tasso Museum. The visits are guided by an actual witness or an expert on the Holocaust.

Voyage of Memory to the 1900’s

Rome, Nonantola, Carpi, Trieste, Udine, and Cercivento.
From the trenches to the Shoah, from the nationalism of World War I, to the tragedy of the anti-Jewish persecutions and the Shoah. An instructional and historical odyssey on the topics of nationalism, nazi-fascism, problems of the border areas, and trench warfare sites.

Viaggi di istruzione per gli studenti

On the traces of the Arabic presence Muslim in Sicily Journeys reserved for students follow the basic pattern of the adult programs. For years Confronti has organized Voyages of Memory to the deportation and Shoah locations, and now many other types of original travel-study seminars have been added which deal with hands-on dialogue and encounter. During the preparation phase the planning is done in cooperation with the interested teachers. Specific seminars can be arranged to respond to the schools needs. See our For Schools page.
